Choosing A Location To Plant An Orchid

If you receive an orchid plant as a gift, follow the directions that come with the orchid. There are many types of orchids and they have different care needs. When you are choosing your own orchid plant, you will want to choose one that fits your home environment or you local temperature ranges. If the temperatures are too high or too low only part of the time, you may choose to plant your orchid in a pot or container that can be brought inside when the weather is extreme.

Orchid Planting Material

Orchids get most of their nutrients and moisture from aerial roots. The roots will need to be placed in orchid planting material, which is made of bark or fibrous material. The material will not hold a lot of water and orchids need to be watered regularly in accordance to the specific needs of the type of orchid you have. Fertilizer will need to be added regularly to have a healthy orchid plant. When using fibrous material, you will not need to fertilize as often.

Planting Orchids Outdoors

The best time to plant an orchid outdoors is early to mid-May. If the orchid plant shows signs of not doing well in the location you planted it, you will want to dig it up and return it to a pot. You can test an area first by putting the orchid in the pot in the area that you are considering planting it. This will help you to determine if the light, temperature, and humidity will work for the type of orchid that you have. If it grows well, you can make a large well and fill it with orchid planting material and then plant the orchid in the center of it. The spot should drain well so that the plant doesn’t become over watered.
